Foetal monitoring is a valuable diagnostic tool for evaluating the condition of the fetus, and performed with the use of Toco and Ultrasonic transducers.

A Toco transducer monitors the timing and duration of a contraction. The contracting uterus forces a button on the centre of the transducer which in turn produces a waveform on the chart recorder.

The Ultrasonic transducer is used to transmit high frequency sound waves into the fetus. The sound waves are reflected back to the transducer from the heart of the fetus, the changes in these sound waves due to the Doppler principle are used to generate the display signal. The reflected wave is analysed and converted to display the heart rate of the fetus.
